This is a unique therapeutic measure that heals mild and chronic diseases. Even diseases that are believed to be incurable by modern medicine have been healed. The most deeply seated ama (toxins) that cause disease are heavy and sticky and lodge in the deepest tissue layers. Panchakarma permanently eliminates those toxins (ama) from the body allowing healing and restoration of the tissues, channels, digestion and mental functions. Additionally, panchakarma is used to prevent the accumulation of the humors, or as a seasonal health maintenance and a longevity / rejuvenation program. What is unique about this ayurvedic approach is that it is not only used for healing but also for prevention of disease states and rejuvenation (longevity). Panchakarma involves purvakarma (preliminary therapies) that involve body oiling (snehana), sweat therapy (svedhana), herbal tonics, oils and ghee, exercise, food, aroma therapy and lifestyle changes. This is followed by panchakarma cleansing in the ways that depend on the condition. In conjunction shirodhara may be performed that helps with diseases of the head, neck, eyes, ears, nose, and brain. Netra basti with medicated oils or ghee benefits with relief of tension in the eye sockets. Rasayana therapy (paschatakarma) follows panchakarma to reverse the effects of aging and re-enliven the body. They also enhance spiritual vitality and mental strength.
