Ethics and Spiritual Counseling

Ayurveda is truly a complete or holistic science.  The essence of the practitioner must be able to touch the soul of the client.  First, sincerity of the client is judged.  According to vedic texts following rules of virtuous behavior (yama) are suggested:

  1. ahinsa (not harming)
  2. truth (saying what one means)
  3. non stealing (in thought, word or action)
  4. brahmacharya (caution in thought, word and action)
  5. aparigraha (cease from chasing after material wealth or fame)

Following ethical codes of conduct (niyama) are impressed upon, as per vedic texts:

  1. purity (of mind and body)
  2. contentedness
  3. tapas or austerity involving body (worship, purity and simplicity, speech- true, pleasant and beneficial) and mind (cheerfulness, kindness, silence and self-control)
  4. study of the scriptures
  5. thinking of god as the be-all and end-all

Belief is that spiritual evolution and self-realization is attained through meditation, selfless work and pure love for god and his creation, by one, more, or all of these means.
